War and Conflict: The Photojournalist’s
Perspective
Tuesday September 16, 2003 at 7:00 PM
The Sierra Club Photography Section is proud to present Union Tribune Photo journalists Nelvin Cepeda and Earnie Grafton.
Having recently returned from Baghdad, Nelvin and Earnie
will share images from their coverage of war in Iraq. Both will provide personal insights on the media’s role in documenting
the Iraq conflict and present some of the photographs which were used to educate
and inform readers here in San Diego and across the world.
Nelvin will present images from several trips leading up
to the invasion, including pre war assignments in Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. Then, he will detail his advance from the Turkish
border to the capitol to photograph the activities surrounding the fall of Baghdad.
Earnie Grafton will then share his photos and perspectives
as an imbedded photojournalist, traveling from Kuwait north to Baghdad with
the advancing troops.
Don’t miss this unprecedented opportunity to share Nelvin and Earnie’s unique and personal stories, insights and images from this important, historic event.

Currently, our photo club
is in the process of modifying how our members receive their monthly newsletter,
the View Finder. We are trying to
reduce the number of hard copies mailed out each month and have as many members
as possible receive the newsletter via the internet. To achieve this goal, we need our members’
cooperation. If you wish to continue
receiving a printed copy of the View Finder,
please contact Everett Mehner at 2510 Horton Ave., San Diego, CA 92101 or
619-232-9271 or ecmehner@cox.net.
Jo Ann Ginepra and Jim Soe
Nyun provided our club with an amusing and entertaining evening of Scavenger
Hunt results. That whole project took
a lot of thought and planning. Thank
you both. The grand prize winner was Dale Denio for his portrayal of the category
"The Time Machine". Other awards went to Willeah Oelbaum, Steve Cirone,
Ken Rockwell, Carrie Barton, Cathy Scholl, and Debbie Nell.
Thanks also are extended
to Bob Parks for leading the adventure to the Monarch Program in Encinitas.
I believe as many as 20 photographers participated that day.
SAD NOTE
The landmark Jeffrey Pine
perched atop Sentinel Dome in Yosemite National Park has fallen to the ground.
This occurred in mid-August during a heavy storm. The pine had been photographed
by Ansel Adams in 1940 and appears on numerous park postcards.

Jo Ann Ginepra had the cover
and inside story of the June issue of the Presidio Sentinel. In May,
the Union Tribune interviewed her
in conjunction with the Mother's Day Tour that included her home and art work.
Also that month, the magazine Decor and
Style featured her home and photographs for that tour.

The Photography
Section of the San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club is a group of hobbyist-photographers
of all levels who meet to learn more about photography and its applications
in natural settings. Meetings generally
feature a speaker from the local photographic community.
We meet at 7:00
pm on the third Tuesday of each month at the Tierrasanta Community Swimming
Pool Building, 11238 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., which is part of the Tierrasanta
Recreation Center complex. (It is located
about two miles east of I-15, on the left side of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
The Pool Building is directly ahead of you after you make the first right
turn possible from the entrance. The room entrance is on the parking lot level. It is to the left of the center staircase that
leads to the second floor.)
We welcome new
members! To join, pick up a membership
application at any of the meetings, or call Everett Mehner at 619-232-9271 to request an
application, or send your name, address, telephone number, and check to the
address below. Annual membership is $20 and includes a subscription to this
publication, The VIEW Finder.
