Mono Pass and Fourth Recess from Pioneer Basin

Trip 1: Little Lakes Valley (E3A)
Leader: Larry Klaasen Assistant: Pat Klaasen

Surrounded by 13,000 foot peaks, this beautiful classic glacially carved valley is full of lakes to visit. An easy stroll in with a scenic base camp and pleasurable day hikes.

An easy & beautiful hike past many lakes & mountain peaks to our base camp at Chickenfoot Lake, 10,760’. Day hikes to Mono Pass and Mt. Starr, possibly Mt. Morgan via Lower Morgan Lake. With such beautiful names, we should explore Ruby, Gem, and Treasure Lakes. And if you fish, there’s the trout Grand Slam. Day hikes range from easy to hard, kicking back in camp is always an option.

Trip 2: Hilton Lakes (M5B)
Leader: Howard Kellogg Assistant: Pauline Jimenez

Many lakes to explore in this striking alpine setting with a moderate trek in. Peaks to bag, too. Fishing is good, so bring along your pole, skillet, and lots of tall tales for this base camp.

There are four class-2 peak hikes that are possible and will be optional. Campfires are allowed below 10,400 feet, so our plan is to camp between the upper lakes at about 10,320 feet. Note that bringing a 20-pound iron skillet along was a tongue-in-cheek joke.

Trip 3: Tamarack Lakes (M3C)
Leader: Mike Fry Assistant: Walter Konopka

A moderate 3-mile backpack to base camp at Francis Lake, a gain of 1,200 feet. Relax at base camp while glassing for bighorn sheep. Optional climb of Mt. Morgan at 13,750 feet.

The M3C rating is for the mandatory backpack to the base camp, not the optional day hikes. The hike up to Mt. Morgan is much harder, which we will do on Sunday. We will do an easier tour of the lakes in the area on Saturday.

Trip 4: Mono Pass/Pioneer Basin(H8D)
Leader: Jan Hawkins Assistant:Ted Young

Trek over the Sierra Crest at 12,040 foot Mono Pass into a spectacular remote region called Pioneer Basin and the Mono Recesses. Very good conditioning required for this hard hike with awesome views and many remote lakes and valleys to explore.

Map: Mt. Abbott 7.5 Minute, or similar, required.
Day 1: We will backpack by trail 7.5 miles from Mosquito Flat trailhead up 2000 feet over 12,040 foot Mono Pass and down Golden Creek to the Pioneer Basin trail, then up 350 feet more to find a camp site at the lowest Pioneer Basin lake at 10,600 feet.
Day 2: Our all-day cross-country hike will explore the reaches of the Pioneer Basin, with streams to cross, ridges to climb, boulders and talus to maneuver as we visit the numerous lakes, meadows, and vistas.  We'll hike up to 10 miles but you may stay in camp if you choose.
Day 3: Picking up the pace, we'll venture farther from base camp to explore the Hopkins Basin that feeds into Mono Creek.  Expect rugged cross-country terrain, stream crossings, rock scrambling, possible exposure, and 10-14 miles with elevation gains to 3,500 feet. Again, you may stay in camp if you choose.
Day 4: Backpack 7.5 trail miles over Mono Pass to meet the bus before noon.

Trip 5: McGee Creek Circuit(S11E)
Leader: Steve Fausset Assistant: Fred Gabbard

The ultimate in rugged, cross-country travel. Tons of elevation gain/loss on this quick paced, peak bagging loop. For our strongest and most experienced trekkers.

Join us on this adventurous Eastern Sierra circuit. We’ll begin on the McGee Creek trail and end on the Rock Creek trail. In between we’ll do some gorgeous on and off trail exploration. This will include crossing the Sierra Crest in places like McGee Pass and Mono Pass, and whenever possible dropping our packs to climb peaks like Red & White Mtn., Mt Crocker, Mt Hopkins, Mt Huntington, Mt Stanford, and Mt Starr to enjoy their spectacular views. If you have a high adventure quotient and like to explore this is the trip for you! Life is short – do it now!
