Independence Day Bus Trip 2009

Wednesday July 1 - Sunday July 5
INDEPENDENCE DAY BACKPACK BUS TRIP
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
Coordinator: Charity Dominic jackncharity at yahoo dot com 760-798-2756

This year we will leave the crowds behind and visit a quiet and infrequently traveled section of Yosemite National Park. We'll enter from the Glacier Point Road area (7,000ft) and exit via the tumbling and spectacular Chilnualna Falls (4,200ft). Wildflower lovers will enjoy the peaceful forests and meadows of the lower elevation areas. The crown of the southern park is the remote and rugged Clark Range which is dominated by Mt Clark's distinctive narrow summit. Trip cost is $205, which includes charter bus, first night group campground, park entrance fee, and wilderness permit fee. Meals are not included.

To reserve a space, please send a $20 deposit or payment in full of $205 (payable to the Sierra Club) to: Charity Dominic: 1643 Sunnyside Ave., San Marcos, CA 92078. Please include your trip preference, phone number, return address, and e-mail address (or 3 SASE). Full payment due June 1st.

Trip 1: Deer Camp/Alder Creek (E6D - D rating is loss)
Leader: Pauline Jimenez Asst: Walter Konopka

Trip 2: Chilnualna Creek (M7D - D rating is loss)

Backpack from Glacier Point Road/Bridalveil Creek to camp near Chilnualna Creek (7 miles, 1,000' gain). Optional dayhike to nearby lakes (about 3-5 miles); move camp to Chilnualna Fall (3 miles, 2,000' loss). Hike out to North Wawona (4 miles, steep 2,000' loss).

Trip 3: Chiquito Pass/Royal Arch Lake
(M9D - D rating is loss, most gain is +1000')
Leader: Mike Fry Asst: needed

21 mile moderate backpack along southern border of the park. Two nights at beautiful Royal Arch Lake allow a layover day or an optional climb of Buena Vista Pk.

Trip 4: Ostrander Lake/Buena Vista Crest (H9D)
Leader: Needed Asst: needed

This area gives lots of rewards for modest effort. Elevations are low, yet there is plenty of classic glacially sculpted Yosemite granite and an exceptionally rich variety of wildflowers. From Glacier Point Rd we will hike through a ghost forest to camp at beautiful Ostrander Lake. Crosscountry to the Chilnualna lakes area and a optional climb of Buena Vista Peak (9,709ft).

July 4th (17kb)
