2006 Labor Day Bus Trip

Thursday August 31 - Monday September 4
Coordinator: Fred Gabbard FredGabbard@hotmail.com

Four days of backpacking in the Eastern Sierra Nevada from trailheads in the Bishop Creek drainage, including South Lake, Lake Sabrina, and North Lake. The bus departs from Sabre Springs Marketplace at 6pm Thursday, and returns Monday evening. Trip descriptions are tentative until permits are acquired.

To reserve a space, send your trip preferences and a $20 deposit, or payment in full of $180, to: Fred Gabbard, 11574 Windcrest Ln Apt 1424 San Diego, CA 92128. Make checks payable to the Sierra Club. Please include your email address and evening phone number. (If no email, please include 3 self-addressed stamped envelopes.)

Trip 1: ECHO LAKE (S12E)
Leader: Steve Fausset, Asst: COL II needed
Stylin’ from Sabrina Lake, we'll boogie cross-country to camp near Echo Lake at the base of a vast array of 13,000’ Sierra peaks on the east edge of the Evolution Basin, including Mt. Haeckel, Mt. Wallace, Mt. Powell, Mt. Mendel, Mt. Goddard, Mt Huxley, Mt. Warlow, Mt. Spencer, and Mt. Fiske. We'll cha, cha, cha to climb class 2 and 3 routes on as many of these bad boys as we can squeeze into a short trip.

Trip 2: MT SILL /BARRETT LAKES (S11D)
Leader: Rob Baum, Asst: Cecilia Hernandez
Mount Sill (14,162’) has the best summit view of any peak in the Sierra. We will backpack over Bishop and Knapsack pass to camp in the Palisade Basin. Our goal will be to climb Mt. Sill (14,162’). If we have the energy other major peaks are accessible such as Mt. Columbine (12,652’) and Mt. Agassiz (13,893'). All have class 2-3 routes. Scale the heights or fish the lakes, the choice is yours.

Trip 3: SIERRA LAKES TOUR (H8D)
Leader: Dan Anderson, Asst: COL II needed
Last year we went on a meadow bagging extravaganza. This year we will explore several high Sierra lakes and their basins from our base camp on Midnight Lake (11,000’). Then we'll bag Mt Wallace (13,377’), a class-2 climb, to get a bird's eye view of were we've been. We will utilize cross country navigation skills and do some high altitude rock scrambling as we explore this scenic area.

Trip 4: PIUTE PASS (M7C)
Leader: Pauline Jimenez, Asst: Walter Konopka
We will backpack from North Lake (9,360’) along Bishop Creek to Loch Leven and Piute Lake (10,958’). Then we'll go over Piute Pass (11,423’) to spend two nights in the Humphreys Basin, Golden Trout Lakes area (10,820’). On our layover day, you can fish or day hike with us to Hutchison Meadow (9,438’), which is legendary for its wildflowers. Another day hike possibility is windswept Desolation Lake (11,200’).

Trip 5: WONDER LAKES(M4D)
Leader: Mike Fry, Asst: Afra Roet
My plan is to basecamp at Wonder Lakes, behind Lower Lamarck Lake. We will dayhike in the area.
