2005 Labor Day Bus Trip

Thursday September 1 - Monday September 5
Coordinator: Fred Gabbard FredGabbard@hotmail.com 619-297-6471

Four days in the Mt. Whitney high country, with a variety of trips leaving from Eastern Sierra trailheads at Horseshoe Meadow (9,940') and Meysan Lake. The bus departs from Sabre Springs Marketplace at 6pm Thursday, and returns Monday evening.

To reserve a space, send your trip preferences and a $20 deposit, or payment in full of $160, to: Fred Gabbard, 1785 Torrance St., San Diego, CA 92103. Make checks payable to the Sierra Club. Please include your email address and evening phone number. (If no email, please include 3 self-addressed stamped envelopes.)

Trip 1: COTTONWOOD LAKES (M6C)
Leader: Pauline Jimenez, Asst: Howard Kellogg
We will backpack 6 1/4 miles from Horseshoe Meadow (9,940') to our Cottonwood Lakes (11,140') basecamp. Then we'll spend the weekend exploring the Cottonwood Lakes and South Fork Lakes basins. On Sunday, we'll probably move camp downhill a few miles to the Golden Trout Camp area (10,200'). This will save our knees and give us time for a leisurely Monday breakfast before breaking camp.

Trip 2: HIGH SIERRA MEADOW BAGGING (M12C)
Leader: Starla Rivers, Asst: Marty Stevens
If there's a meadow, we bag it - Big Whitney, Little Whitney, Ramshaw, Mulkey - as we move camp every day in search of greener pastures. But don't think it's without some uphill challenges as we go out over Cottonwood Pass and return via Mulkey Pass. Also possible side trip up Kern Pk (H9D). Approx. 32 total backpacking miles.

Trip 3: HORSESHOE MEADOW (H6C)
Leader: Mike Fry, Asst: Needed
20 miles, 3770' gain and loss, including Cottonwood Pass 11,200' and New Army Pass 12,400'. This is a moderately paced trip, but the altitude is high. There will be time for optional peak bagging of Mt. Langley 14,042' and several others in Miter Basin. This is a beautiful alpine route into the southeastern corner of Sequoia National Park.

Trip 4: MEYSAN LAKE PEAK BAGGER (S6E)
Leader: Rob Baum, Asst: Kirk Belles
We'll backpack in on trail for around 3 miles (3,000ft gain) and set up our base camp in this beautiful lake-studded area. We will be surrounded by towering peaks named after such legendary explorers as Mallory and Irvine. Possible off-trail climbs include Lone Pine peak (12,944ft., class 2), Mount Mallory (13,850ft, class 2), Mount Irvine (13,770ft, class 2), and Mount LeConte (13,960ft, class 3). Hike the peaks or hang out at the lake.

Trip 5: MITER BASIN (S12E)
Leader: Steve Fausset, Asst: Diane Purkey
Fast-paced trip over New Army Pass to climb several class 2 and 3 peaks from Miter Basin, possibly including Mts. Corcoran (13,760'), Pickering (13,485'), and the Miter (12,770').
