Independence Day Bus Trip 2004

Thursday July 1 - Monday July 5
Coordinator: Rob Baum (E-mail preferred) RobertBaum@netzero.net 619-460-0551

This year we will leave the crowds behind and visit a quiet and infrequently traveled section of Yosemite National Park. We'll enter from the Glacier Point Road area (7,000ft) and exit via the tumbling and spectacular Chilnualna Falls (4,200ft). Wildflower lovers will enjoy the peaceful forests and meadows of the lower elevation areas. The crown of the southern park is the remote and rugged Clark Range which is dominated by Mt Clark's distinctive narrow summit.

To reserve a space, please send a $25 deposit or payment in full of $160 ($150 for members) payable to the Sierra Club to: Rob Baum, 9858 Avenida Ricardo, Spring Valley, CA 91977. Please include your trip preference, e-mail address or, if no e-mail, your phone number and 3 SASE's.

Trip 1: Merced Pass (S12E)
Leader: Fred Gabbard, Asst: Steve Fausset
Fast-paced trip from Mono Meadow up the Illilouette Valley to camp at the Merced Pass Lakes. Class 2 climbs of Red Peak and Merced Peak (11,726'). Move camp to Johnson Lake, climb Buena Vista Peak and return via Chilnualna Creek past the falls. Total distance: 48 mi. (29 mi. backpacking, 19 mi. day hiking and climbing).

Trip 2: Ostrander Lake/Buena Vista Crest (H9D)
Leader: Mike Fry, Asst: needed
This area gives lots of rewards for little effort. Elevations are low, yet there is plenty of classic glacially sculpted Yosemite granite and an exceptionally rich variety of wildflowers. From Glacier Point Rd we will hike through a ghost forest to camp at beautiful Ostrander Lake. Crosscountry to the Chilnualna lakes area and a possible climb of Buena Vista Peak (9,709ft).

Trip 3: Chilnualna Creek (M7D - D rating is loss)
Leader: Pauline Jimenez, Asst: Doug Nolff
The D rating on this trip is elevation loss. Backpack from Glacier Point Road/Bridalveil Creek to camp near Chilnualna Creek (7 miles, 1,000' gain). Optional dayhike to nearby lakes (about 3-5 miles); move camp to Chilnualna Fall (3 miles, 2,000' loss). Hike out to North Wawona (4 miles, steep 2,000' loss).

Trip 4: Deer Camp/Alder Creek (E6D - D rating is loss)
Leader: Walter Konopka, Asst: needed
Backpack along Deer Camp trail to the Empire Meadow/Alder Creek area. Day hike to Alder creek, with its waterfalls, springs and hanging gardens. Explore quiet meadows filled with wildflowers and streams. Exit via spectacular Chinualna Falls. (2,000ft loss)

July 4th (17kb)
