The opening trip to the year's bus trip season will bring us back to the beatific Sequoia National Forest. The west side, where the trips will explore, will afford us the grandeur of the giant conifers as well as the petite prettiness of spring flowers. The bus will leave Thursday evening, May 22, and return late Monday, May 26.
Trip 1: Freeman Creek (E1A) Leader: Pauline Jimenez, Asst: Jim McCleary Camp in the 1700-acre grove of Giant Sequoias. This easternmost grove of Sequoia sempervirens has hundreds of trees, including one named for George H. Bush. Optional day hikes include easy walks among the trees and strenuous climbs to the Needles Lookout and Hermit Dome.
Trip 2: Burnt Corral (M7C) Leader: Bob Stinton, Asst: Marcy Stinton An exploratory backpack with scenic day hikes into the spectacular Golden Trout Wilderness and Little Kern River drainage. Total day-hiking miles 20; total backpacking miles 14. Hardest day: 10 miles with 1200' gain.
Trip 3: Trout Meadow (M8C) Leader: Mike Fry, Asst: Brad Buffett Explore the scenic Golden Trout Wilderness. Camp a few miles from the mighty Kern River. Optional day hikes include the Kern River, Angora Mtn (10,202') and the Coyote Peaks(10,892') just inside Sequoia National Park. Hardest day: 7.8 miles, 1,570' gain.
Trip 4: Lion Meadows (H10C) Leader: Starla Rivers, Asst: Fred Gabbard No meadow lounging for us! We will base camp in Lion Meadows and set off to explore the Golden Trout Wilderness. Possible peak bagging attempt on Angora Mountain. Backpacking miles: 20 round trip.
