Labor Day Backpack Bus Trip 2002

Sequoia National Park (SNP)
August 29 - September 2 / Thursday-Monday
Coordinator: Starla Rivers

Come join us for our last hurrah of the summer 2002 bus trip program. Our Labor Day trip this year will feature 4 backpacks in the awe-inspiring Giant Forest of SNP. The bus will depart San Diego at 6PM Thursday, Aug 29, and return about 7PM Monday, Sep 2.

To reserve a space, send a $25 deposit - or payment in full of $135 if member, $145 if nonmember - with two SASEs to Starla Rivers, 6460 Convoy Ct #314, San Diego, CA 92117. See refund policy. Make checks payable to the Sierra Club. Please include your trip preference, evening telephone number, email address if any, and Sierra Club membership number.

Trip 1: J.O. Pass (H7D)
Ldr: Dan Anderson, Assist: Starla Rivers
From Lodgepole we will head up along Silliman Creek to camp along Clover Creek just below tree line (6.5 mi., 2000' gain), where we will base camp. Optional cross-country hike to J.O. Pass and Jennie Lake and Silliman Crest to bag Mt. Silliman, and possibly Twin Peaks, with scenic views north of the high-country. Mt. Silliman topo. Total distance: 13 miles backpacking, approximately 10 miles dayhiking.

Trip 2: Twin Lakes (H9D)
Ldr: Lynn Nebus; Assist: Paul Gardner
We'll choose our basecamp location on the hike in, 7 to 9 miles from the Lodgepole trailhead. Adventure lovers will enjoy scenic dayhikes beyond Silliman Pass (10,165') to alpine lakes and other nearby wonders, and to Mt. Silliman (11,188') for breathtaking views on either side of the Kings-Kaweah Divide. Total distance: 14-18 miles backpacking, approximately 10 miles dayhiking.

Trip 3: Tablelands (H7C, optional S5D climb of Alta Peak, 11,200')
Ldr: Mike Fry, Assist: TBD
Trail and cross-country loop trip from Wolverton Ski area past Panther Gap, Alta Meadow, Moose Lake / Tablelands, Pear Lake. Total distance: approximately 20 miles backpacking.

Trip 4: Alta Meadow (M7C)
Ldr: Marty Stevens; Assist: Kirk Belles
From Crescent Meadow with a layover day near Alta Meadow. Day hike to Alta Peak (M7C). Return via Panther Gap and Wolverton. Backpacking distance: approximately 20 miles total backpacking; longest day 7 miles.
