More Information _________________________________________________________ Independence Day Bus Trip 2009 Wednesday July 2 - Sunday July 5 INDEPENDENCE DAY BACKPACK BUS TRIP YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Coordinator: Charity Dominic jackncharity at yahoo dot com 760-798-2756 This year we will leave the crowds behind and visit a quiet and infrequently traveled section of Yosemite National Park. We'll enter from the Glacier Point Road area (7,000ft) and exit via the tumbling and spectacular Chilnualna Falls (4,200ft). Wildflower lovers will enjoy the peaceful forests and meadows of the lower elevation areas. The crown of the southern park is the remote and rugged Clark Range which is dominated by Mt Clark's distinctive narrow summit. Trip cost is $205, which includes charter bus, first night group campground, park entrance fee, and wilderness permit fee. Meals are not included. More Information _________________________________________________________ Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands, Channel Island National Park, Thursday, May 21 - Monday, May 25 Coordinator: Howard Kellogg hkellogg at earthlink dot net 760-996-5581 This is our second visit to Santa Rosa, the second largest island, and our first visit to San Miguel, the most distant island available to the public. The full cost is $295 for your choice of island (until spaces fill), which includes charter bus to Ventura Thursday evening, motel Thursday night, boat to and from the islands, campground (3 nights), and day hikes on islands. Meals are not included. We will offer 2 different hikes each day to explore the islands. We return Monday evening. Santa Rosa’s first class campground is 1.5 miles and up a hundred feet up from a wet landing on the beach. Campers are landed on a beach from small boats or rubber rafts. It has flush toilets and solar showers. The island has 500 plant species including the only other native site of the Torrey Pine tree, and lots of human history. We’ll offer two longer hikes of 12-13 miles and two shorter hikes. Last year we had ranger-led walks and an informal archaeology presentation. We camp close to a beach, and there are canyons to be explored by those willing to get their feet wet. San Miguel is a wilder experience. Campers are landed on a beach from small boats or rubber rafts. Campers must then carry their gear, INCLUDING ALL WATER, ¾ mile and 500 feet up on a narrow trail. San Miguel offers a remote experience, a caliche forest and a large population of pinnipeds. Most hiking is allowed only with Park Ranger escort. More Information Bus Trips are chapter fundraisers organized to multiple special destinations each year. Each year we organize trips to faraway destinations (usually the Sierra Nevada) for long weekends at Memorial Day (May), July 4th (Independence Day, June-July), and Labor Day (September). Usually we schedule one bus for each trip, but beginning again in 2000 we have been scheduling a second bus for July 4th trips to Yosemite. Though participants travel to and from trailheads together on a bus, we split into groups of about 12 (including leader and assistant) for backpacks to separate locations. Some groups establish a basecamp and enjoy dayhikes from one location; other groups move camp each day; other groups employ a combination. Each trip is announced in the Hi Sierran months in advance.
