More about CAN

Will It Take a Lot of Time?
NO. We average about one Alert per month, and never send out more than two in one month. Email alerts may be slightly more frequent, but the average will still be two a month or less. In most cases responding won’t take a lot of your time. Making a phone call only takes a few minutes. Writing a letter takes longer, but the letters don’t have to be long. If you have expertise on a particular issue you can go into greater detail, but a hand-written letter or postcard is great.

Who Can Join?
Anyone who is concerned and willing to help. We encourage members to join the Sierra Club, but you don’t have to be a Sierra Club member to join CAN.

How Can I Join or Get More Info?
To join or get more info, call or email CAN co-chair John Hartley (619-299-8870, hartley2k@aol.com), or send in the application on the back to the Sierra Club Office. You are also invited to attend our Steering Committee meetings which are held the third Monday of every month at 7 pm at the Claire de Lune Coffee House in North Park (2906 University Ave, San Diego).

Some More Info on CAN
CAN differs from other alert networks and environmental email list-serves in that is run by the Conservation Committee of your local Sierra Club Chapter and the focus is on local issues. It is also solely an Alert list. We don’t generally send out announcements or other information that doesn’t relate to an Alert. We also limit the number of Alerts we send out so you won’t be bombarded with regular mail or email.

Periodically we send out a newsletter which contains updates on past Alert issues as well as helpful information on letter writing, environmental laws, etc. We also call CAN members periodically to confirm they are still interested in receiving Alerts. (This is why we ask for a phone number.)

However, we never call or use the list in any way for the purpose of soliciting funds (although we will let you know, in writing only, if funds are being sought for particular purposes related to an Alert, e.g., legal action, and we may ask, again in writing only, for voluntary contributions to help support CAN mailings.) We also will never give your name or address to any other organization.
