Born in Norfolk,
VA,
Bob Pamperin called San Diego home
for most of his life. He was a graduate
of San Diego State
University and a member of the
San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club. He
was also active in the Harbor Optimist Club, and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Bob worked as an engineer for Convair-Astronautics. He was a former lifeguard for Coronado,
and enjoyed skin diving for abalone.
He was pursuing this last hobby when he met his terrible
fate in the jaws of a "shark so big it looked like a killer whale" in La Jolla
Cove. His diving companion, only 50 feet
away, and many cove swimmers watched in horror as Bob was seized and swallowed
whole by the man-eating shark. Pamperin's body was never recovered.
1959 oceanographers said sharks of the kind had been coming
into California coastal waters in
increasing numbers due to recent warming trends in ocean areas.
Sierra Club San Diego named our member library in his honor.
