Family Section

July/August 2004 Newsletter

Do you have children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews that you spend time with? Would you like to participate in activities that are healthy, fun, and allow you to meet like-minded families? If so, join the Family Section of the San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club!

Years ago, some enterprising parents created the Focus on Youth Section within the San Diego Chapter. Activities included everything from watching Padres games to hiking and camping. Everything was great until those kids grew up, went to college, and maybe even joined the 20s and 30s Singles Section. After a short period without leaders who had children, the Section faded away.

Naturally, the cycle of life eventually delivered new leaders with children who are now reviving the Family Section. So check us out! Sign up for our free electronic newsletter here. It lists activities, outings, and even outdoor-kid-focused classified ads (reduce, reuse and recycle those joggers, baby carriers, and kids hiking boots).

In years past, the Family Section organized an annual summer backpacking trip and a youth Nature Knowledge Workshop. We'll try to bring those back, too! So we are looking for responsible adults who can organize activities, Chapter outings leaders to lead hikes, and participants to share in the fun and make it all worthwhile.

Are you concerned that there may not be other children of the same age at an activity? Don't worry, just ask the leader ahead of time! It is OK to make your participation contingent on other kids in the right age range signing up.

Would you like to be a part of and help create this community of conservation-oriented families? We will next meet at the Club’s New Member Orientation at 7PM on July 14th at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center. Or just join one of our hikes or activities – we look forward to meeting you soon!

If you would like to receive the Family Section e-newsletter and other information for members, please subscribe by filling out this form. You will need your Sierra Club member number, printed on the address labels of your Hi Sierran newsletter and Sierra magazine.

If you are interested in leading outings, please plan to participate in the Chapter Outing Leader training on September 25th and 26th!
