Information Updates

ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY

December 9!!

In an effort to try something new and different, this year we’re having our party during the day, in the outdoors! We’ll still have holiday crafts, activities for ALL ages, and (out)door prizes, but our pot-luck will be geared towards a cook out! We’ll supply drinks, plates, paper goods, hamburgers, hot-dogs and veggie-burgers as well as a variety of outdoor recreational equipment. Leaders will be leading short hikes in the park throughout the day. Playground and restrooms are nearby. No reservations needed, just drop by with a side dish! We’ll be at San Dieguito County Park in Del Mar, from 11:00 -4:00. From San Diego, take I-5 about 20 miles north to Lomas Santa Fe Drive exit. Go east 1.5 miles to Highland, then proceed to the Upper Park entrance. Follow our signs to the picnic area. There is shelter-only heavy rain cancels!

Next Quarterly Meeting

  ~ Monday, February 12 ~

Quarterly Meetings are held from 6 pm to 8 pm (dinner 6:00 - 6:30 and meeting from 6:30 - 8:00 PM) at the University Towne Center food court by the ice skating rink. Meetings are open to all members and their children. FOY will contribute $5 per family that attends.

New Membership Chair

Alice Boone has resigned after many years of service to FOY. This “behind the scenes” position is very important and we Thank Alice for her dedication. Alice has handed over the reigns to Dia Mays, who volunteered to do this along with her Outings Co-Chair duties. Many Thanks again to Alice and Dia!

New Focus On Youth Information Number

Per our new Membership Chair’s request, all inquiries re: FOY and /or FOY newsletters are to be directed to her at 619-562-7439. Our recording at the chapter office will also list this number, so that future members can reach a real human voice and get a newsletter mailed out that day!

Wilderness Basics Course

Only once each year, the Sierra Club offers comprehensive training for people who want to enjoy and explore the wilderness in a safe and responsible manner that will maintain the purity and integrity of the wilderness environment. Registration takes place the first night with a cost of $95 for San Diego WBC and $85 North County WBC cash or check only. San Diego WBC is held at the Scottish Rites Center Jan 23 - Mar 27. North County WBC is held at San Pasqual High School Jan 16 - Mar 20. See Hi-Sierran for more details.

2001 Calendars

Visit the Sierra Club bookstore at 3830 Ray Street in San Diego to see and purchase our beautiful calendars. If you can’t make it to the bookstore, there is a order form in the Hi-Sierran or shop online at www.sierraclub.org/chapters/sandiego/bookstore. The calendar shows all the grandeur of the North American wilderness and is gift-boxed for the holidays. They also have Chapter shirts, tote bag and holiday greeting cards. Do your holiday shopping with the Sierra Club and support a great cause!

Public Relations Needed

If you or someone you know can give an hour or two a month to FOY, we could sure use some help spreading the word. We need a liaison to get our group noticed by local media by telling people who we are and what we do! Though our section is local, we are part of a well respected national organization, and a volunteer “internship” with us looks great on a resume. Membership in the club is not necessary. This position can be shared. Please call Laura Cramer at 760-341-5448 , or e-mail: callcramers@earthlink.net if interested.
