Ghost Town Extravaganza Saturday, October 31, 2009 to Sunday, November 01, 2009 What could be more appropriate this Halloween weekend than to visit the ghosts and ruins of California's coloful past? Come with us to this eerie desert landscape near Death Valley. Camp at the historic ghost town op Ballarat (flush toilets & hot showers). On Saturday, do a challenging hike to ghost town Lookout City with expert Hal Fowler who will regale us with tales of this wild west town. Sat. evening, Happy Hour and potluck feast, followed by a midnight visit to Ballarat's graveyard. On Sunday, a quick visit to the infamous Riley town site before heading home. The Wilderness Basics Course runs once each year. The 2010 year's course runs from January 19—March 23. Students meet for lectures every Tuesday night from 7-9:30 p.m. Outings are organized for every other weekend, with minor exceptions.
Experience the remote beauty of the wilderness with intelligence and confidence!
This comprehensive course will give you key information about: Map reading, Compass use, Equipment, Clothing selection, Food selection and cooking, Physical conditioning, Sanitation, and Lots more!
Participants are taught skills to safely enjoy the wilderness. These skills are taught in ten lectures and are practiced in overnight outings: Car Camp, Land Navigation, Mountain and/or Desert Backpack, and Snow Camp.
Our goal is to share our knowledge and skills in the safe enjoyment of wilderness areas and to convey a sense of responsibility for maintaining the purity and integrity of the wilderness environment.
Participants must supply their own equipment which may be rented from many sporting goods stores. Information about equipment will be covered in the course lectures.
Persons 18 years of age and older are eligible to take this course. more...
COWLES MOUNTAIN 6:30 EVENING HIKE Wednesday, November 04, 2009 Grade: M6C ?... Take a quick, fun hike up the Big Rock side of San Diego's highest point. Learn about the chaparral world by flashlight. Bring hiking boots, a light jacket, flashlight, water and a munchie. Call for required signup, and leave word how late in the evening I can return your call.
All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.
Please remember that outings are intended for adults 18+ and pets are not allowed unless otherwise indicated.
